Secure Your Email: Enable MFA Today

Recent Spike in Compromised Email Inboxes. How to Protect Your Inbox.

Updated over 2 months ago

Why This Matters:

We’ve seen a sharp increase in compromised email inboxes, with fraudsters gaining access to carrier email accounts and impersonating dispatchers to steal loads, payments, or sensitive data. These attacks can happen without warning—and without Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), they’re often successful.

How Does This Happen?

Bad actors are often able to gain access to email inboxes through phishing schemes. A phishing scheme is an attempt to steal personal information by impersonating a trusted third-party. A bad actor will send an email with a “from” email address very similar to a trusted third-party’s email address and with email content very similar to the trusted third-party’s typical email content. Unsuspecting recipients click on the link in the email and are redirected to the bad actor’s website, which imitates the third-party’s website. Victims enter login credentials into the counterfeit website, and at that point, their login credentials are compromised often without their knowledge. Bad actors will access email inboxes and wait until valuable information is transmitted.

What You Can Do Right Now:

Enabling MFA is one of the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access. It adds an extra layer of protection beyond your password and stops most fraud attempts in their tracks.

How to Turn On MFA for Your Email Provider:

Gmail

  1. Under “How to sign in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification

  2. Follow the prompts to set up your phone or authenticator app

Microsoft Outlook/Hotmail

  1. Click Advanced security options

  2. Select Two-step verification and follow the setup steps

Yahoo Mail

  1. Turn on Two-step verification

  2. Add your phone number or an authenticator app

What to Do If You Think Your Email Has Been Compromised:

  • Immediately change your password

  • Turn on MFA

  • Alert Highway and your partners (Broker, Shipper, etc)
