Overview
The threat of fraud is prolific and impacts all of us. The ELD connection between you (the carrier) and Highway builds trust with our broker partners (i.e., our customers) and secures the supply chain. For good reason, carriers with an ELD connected to Highway get access to the best freight.
To those of you who have already connected your ELD to Highway - thank you for your partnership. To those considering it - we hope to earn your trust and answer any questions about how this can benefit your business. While we know this approach to transparency is new, we are deeply convinced by the results. Our customers and carriers with connected ELDs report stronger partnerships and more secure operations in today’s supply chain.
Here’s what we do not do
Highway does not collect, store, share, or sell any of the following ELD data:
Hours of Service (HOS)
Driver-related information
Record of Duty Status (RODS)
Photos or videos
Safety events like harsh braking, turning, or collisions
Engine diagnostics
Fault codes
Fuel efficiency
Highway does not share your ELD access credentials with brokers or any other third-party
Highway does not alter any of your ELD information or change any settings on your account
Here’s what we do
We disclose the list of vehicles that are active on your ELD, including each vehicle’s VIN
We use location history to increase your rank in relevant lane search results and to prevent fraud
In the future, we will provide track and trace information to our customers only while you’re on a contracted load for that customer
The benefits to you
Brokers favor carriers willing to offer verifiable transparency. Your ELD connection to Highway means your ability to haul valuable cargo has been not just professed, but proven. Access will be opened to more brokers and to more loads. Brokers prioritize carriers with a connected ELD in carrier sourcing and lane searching results. Carriers with a connected ELD will also have first access to a new, free product, built specifically for carriers, to verify the identities of brokerages. The ELD connection will always be utilized to connect legitimate carriers with more brokers looking to book loads. Carriers verified in Highway are preferred by brokers looking for reliable partners.
Common misconceptions
“Highway is studying and sharing my HOS and driver-related ELD data.” - We don’t collect, store, share, or sell this data. We have no interest in it.
“Highway is selling all of my data.” - We use your ELD connection to establish your credibility and will track your location while you are on a contracted load for one of our customers using upcoming track and trace services.
“Highway is tracking me while I’m off duty or at home.” - We will only track your location while you’re on a contracted load for one of our customers.
“Highway won’t accommodate my lawful ELD exemption.” - We do not have the ability to accept ELD exemptions - it is our customers who get to make ELD exemptions. When you make this claim with our customer, you may be prompted to upload your a) title or loan agreement, b) cab card or registration, and c) driver's license. These documents are included in an email sent directly to the customer for review. The hiring decision is adjudicated by our customer without input from Highway.
“Highway uses my username, password, and administrative privileges to access and update my ELD account.” - Highway supports secure, API-based connections to ELD providers, and neither wants nor needs your username and password unless, and in limited circumstances, your ELD provider insists on our collecting this information to establish your API-based connection. The driver-level permissions of some ELD providers are not able to achieve a successful API connection; if your provider has this restriction, API credentials with additional permissions may be required to establish the initial connection. We do not make changes to your account or its settings.
“Highway refuses to support my ELD provider.” - More than 99% of all motor carriers in the United States use one of the hundreds of ELD providers supported by Highway. We are actively building or willing to support connections to API-enabled ELD providers who meet our highest standards for the secure transmission of reliable data. If your ELD provider is not integrated with Highway, please send them a note and ask them to reach out to eldintegrations@highway.com.
“Highway can’t be trusted to keep my data safe.” - We use industry-leading, bank-grade security that includes SOC 2 Type II certification based on an assessment for controls in all five Trust Service Principles (TSP Section 100), 256-bit AES and SSL/TLS encryption, ISO 27001 conformity, and zero-knowledge encryption.
