Empower carriers to protect who they are

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Overview

Identity Proofing is a facet of Highway’s Identity Engine and it creates an added level of security for our carriers. By incorporating Identity Proofing, we are prioritizing the safety of our carriers in order to promote trust, mitigate fraud, and prevent bad actors from interfering with and disrupting their potential business.

What is Identity Proofing?

Carrier Identity is the cornerstone of our community at Highway. Our Identity Engine is robust, and our digital interactions utilize proven and emerging technologies for authentication, authorization, and capability in order to establish confidence in the real-world identity of our users. Identity Proofing is central to authentication, and it empowers Highway to resolve, validate, and verify our users. These steps enhance the security, efficiency, and strength of our identity assurance process, and empower meaningful interactions within our community.

Verification Steps

Our Identity Proofing process accurately, quickly, and securely validates government-issued photo IDs and live photos of our users. Certain personal information is collected and verified in order to prove validated documentation for the claimed identity of a person actually matches the physical, live existence of the person presenting that information. This process also includes dynamic, risk-based Identity Assurance Level (IAL) elevation, supported by trained, US-based, multilingual Proofing Agents. New users or carriers will complete Identity Proofing as part of the onboarding process, and existing users may be prompted to complete this process upon logging in. If users do not complete this process, their access will not be confirmed.

For document verification, users are required to capture a live photo of their government-issued photo ID. Users will be presented with a list of options for various types of government-issued photo IDs, such as driver’s licenses and passports. We collect a legal first and last name, but users are able to enter a preferred first name to their profile in Highway.

For photo verification, users are required to submit live photos of themselves, which are then analyzed and compared against their government-issued photo ID.

Please ensure the information provided to Highway is valid, accurate, and up-to-date in order to avoid any delays in verification, or the need for our team to follow up and request additional information.

Biometric Data Use

Highway takes the critical responsibility of safeguarding data (like PII and sensitive information) collected from our users very seriously. We handle the personal biometric information, including biological and behavioral characteristics, collected during identity verification for purposes outlined in our Privacy Policy. Highway does not disclose government ID, photos, and/or the information obtained from them externally except in very limited circumstances, and only in a manner consistent with our Privacy Policy. It can only be accessed internally by trained Process Assistants and Proofing agents on an as needed basis.

Troubleshooting Tips

How long does the process take to complete?

  • This is a relatively quick process for users, and should only take a couple of minutes to complete.

For government-issued photo ID verification, what types of documents can I upload?

  • You will be presented with a list of various options that are accepted, such as driver’s licenses and passports.

Can’t access your camera?

  • If you receive a notification that we can’t access your camera, you will need to enable camera permissions for your device and/or browser in order to complete the verification process.

Having difficulty capturing high-quality photos?

  • If you are having difficulty with photo quality you can try to adjust your lighting, reduce any potential glares, hold the camera (or government-issued photo ID, if applicable) as still as possible, and switch to a mobile device if you are using a desktop computer (as mobile phones typically have higher quality cameras)

Failing to capture a screenshot or seeing a “play” icon displayed?

  • If you see a notification that we failed to capture a screenshot or a “play” icon appears when you attempt to capture a photo, check that your device is sufficiently charged and has “low power mode” turned off, as that limits video function to save battery power

How do re-attempts work?

  • After we have collected information from users, we will attempt to verify it. If the user fails, there are 2 re-attempts before the verification fails.

What should I do if my troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the issue?

  • If your troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the issue or if you need additional support, contact the Highway support team at security@highway.com.
